Diabetes is managed rather than cured — and managed well, it need not shape your life. The aim is to keep a few numbers steady over years, not to chase a perfect reading on any single day.

A personalised plan usually covers:

• Blood glucose, with a target range agreed for you rather than a textbook figure
• Blood pressure and cholesterol, which carry as much long-term risk as sugar does
• Medication reviewed regularly as your needs change
• Eating and movement built around what you actually do, and what you can afford
• Routine checks of eyes, feet and kidney function

What makes the difference is consistency and honest reporting. If a plan is not working — the tablets are hard to remember, the diet does not fit your household, the readings are worse than you have admitted — that is the most useful thing you can bring to an appointment. The plan then changes to fit you.

A number of small procedures that people assume require a hospital can be done in the consulting rooms, under local anaesthetic, in a single appointment.

• Wound care and suturing
• Abscess incision and drainage
• Mole and skin tag removal
• Ingrown toenail procedures
• Intra-articular (joint) injections
• VMMC circumcision

In practice that means an appointment rather than an admission: you arrive, the area is numbed, the procedure is done, and you go home the same day with aftercare instructions. No general anaesthetic, no theatre booking, no overnight stay.

Recovery is usually straightforward, though it varies with the procedure and with you. Anything removed from the skin that looks at all suspicious can be sent for laboratory examination — and that decision is made with you before anything is done.

If a procedure genuinely does need a hospital or a specialist, you will be told so plainly and referred.

An intravenous drip delivers fluid, vitamins and minerals directly into the bloodstream rather than through the gut. The practice offers several formulations, and which one suits you — if any — is decided at a consultation rather than chosen off a menu.

What a drip is: a controlled dose of fluid and micronutrients, given under medical supervision, usually over thirty to sixty minutes.

What a drip is not: a treatment for illness, a substitute for a balanced diet, or a cure for a diagnosed condition. Claims that infusions detoxify the body or resolve underlying disease are not supported by good evidence, and you will not hear them here.

Before any infusion the practice takes a history and checks whether it is safe for you. Some people should not have them at all — particularly anyone with kidney or heart conditions, or who is pregnant. There are real risks associated with intravenous access, and they are explained to you beforehand.

If persistent tiredness or frequent infections have a medical cause, the useful step is finding it. That is a consultation, not a drip.

Childhood visits do two things at once: they keep your child’s immunisations on schedule, and they give the doctor regular sight of how your child is growing and developing.

South Africa’s Expanded Programme on Immunisation schedules vaccines at birth and then at 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, and again at 6 and 12 years. Keeping to it matters — the timing is designed to protect children when they are most vulnerable.

At the same visits the practice checks:

• Weight, length or height, and head circumference, plotted on a growth chart over time
• Feeding, sleep and general wellbeing
• Developmental milestones — movement, hearing, vision, speech and social response
• Anything you have noticed and are unsure about

A single measurement means very little. The value is in the trend across visits, which is why keeping the Road to Health booklet up to date is genuinely useful.

If your child has missed vaccines they can almost always be caught up. Bring the booklet and the schedule is restarted from where it stopped.
